Parent Involvement Policy

Glen Cove Elementary School

School Parental Involvement Policy 2017-2018

General Expectations

The school will jointly develop with parents (SSC, ELAC, PTA) a parental policy for all students.

The school will notify parents about the policy through the weekly newsletter, Back-to-School Night and parent conferences.  The policy will be available to the public upon request.

The policy will be reviewed and updated to reflect current plan implementation efforts.

The parents and teachers will review the school compact at parent conferences and sign the form together.

The school agrees to be governed by the following statutory definition of parental involvement, and will carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition: Parental involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities. Parents are to have an integral role in assisting their child’s learning.  They will be encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school.   They are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child.

Implementation of Parental Involvement Policy

Parents will be notified through the weekly newsletter, Back-to-School Night, and parent conferences that there is a policy and philosophy of parent involvement and participation.

The policy will be reviewed at ELAC and SSC meetings and adjusted to meet the changing needs of the school.

There will be five ELAC and SSC meetings held in accordance with state requirements and school bi-laws.  Meetings will be advertised in the weekly newsletter.  Participation will be encouraged through the newsletter and at Back-to-School Night.  At these meetings parents and the community will be informed about School Improvement activities.

Through the newsletter, Back-to-School Night and parent conferences, parents will be provided a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.

The phone system will be used regularly to inform parents of important events such as: first day of school, Back-to-School Night, book fair, Holiday Sing-a-long, Black History Night, International Night Potluck, Ocean Night, evening science festivals, chorus night, end of the year ice cream social with slide show, Moms and Muffins, Dads and Donuts, etc.  These events are also ways for parents to become involved with their children and the school in valuable learning community building.

Communication will be provided in the home language of students as appropriate.  Spanish speaking parents have provided input the Google translate for documents is OK.  It is understood that we do not have additional resources for more accurate translation.

Parents will be integral partners in our School Success Team process as appropriate for students with special needs or concerns.

This School Parental Involvement Policy has been developed jointly with parent input through the ELAC and SSC.

This policy was adopted by Glen Cove Elementary School on September 10, 2013

and will be in effect for 2013-14 school year.  The policy will be available in the office for parents to review along with the school level plan.
